Umemodoshi (埋め戻し) – during the foundation phase, trenches are dug, formwork is built, and concrete is poured. After the concrete has cured to an acceptable level, the formwork is removed and the excavated areas are backfilled. This backfilling is called umemodoshi.
Any excess dirt is then transported to a landfill site or similar secondary location. Care should be taken to backfill so as to leave only the portion of earth that the concrete foundation has displaced. Mounding the backfill slightly will account for settling, and reduce unnecessary transport of earth.
