Taimen-Kicchin (対面キッチン) – a kitchen where the stove and sink is situated such that whoever is using it is facing the dining or living room – whichever is adjacent to the kitchen. This assumes that there is an opening from the top of the sink or stove (whichever is higher), and not walled off as a separate room. This is a departure from the classical work kitchen in that the housewife is able to communicate freely and have contact with guests and family while cooking.
