Shitaji (下地) – any framework or material installed prior to finished surface — generally used to mean as framework for drywall — but also for the purpose of having solid material to screw into for shelving and cabinetry, hand rails, etc, or simply as a sublayer for the purpose of insulation, soundproofing, or to bring the finished surface up to a desired point.
