Sashigane (差し金 or 指矩) – n – an “L” shaped stainless steel ruler with either metric or shaku units inscribed on its length. A sashigane can be used to perform a wide variety of seemingly small but extremely important tasks. The two main tasks for which the sashigane is most known for, is measuring (within the given sashigane’s range) and taking squares and angles. The versatility of the sashigane makes it arguably one of the most indispensable hand tools in the Japanese carpenter’s arsenal.
