Kui (杭) – n – a stake, post, pile, or stump, used for land division markers, fences, or even structural foundations. There are many kinds of kui, some wooden and others steel or steel-reinforced concrete. Wooden ones are typically used for fences and land borders, while concrete ones are sometimes used for foundations. Steel kui are made of similar tubular dimensions as steel scaffolding here in Japan, and can be used repeatedly as opposed to wooden ones.
