Koubai (勾配) – n – koubai on its own simply means slope, but in the context of house-building, the degree to which roofs and ceilings slope is defined by the term “koubai”, preceded by a unit of the Japanese shaku measurement system. For example, “san-zun-koubai”, which means a rise of 3 sun over a run of 10 (1 shaku), is equivalent to a 30 percent slope. See the image below for an illustration on this concept.
