Kizami

Kizami (刻み) – the now largely obsolete craft of joint-preparation for wooden structural elements (columns, beams, etc) by hand in Japanese carpentry. Today, computer aided precut lumber has all but eliminated the need for kizami by hand, but knowledge and ability in this field is still regarded as a benchmark in the Japanese carpentry world.
