Inpei (隠蔽) – in-wall wiring and duct work, so as to be hidden after walls are finished. This is in contrast to roshutsu (露出), which is to install such wiring and duct work on the outside of finished walls, leaving them visible. Obviously, when building a new structure, the norm would be to conceal all or as much of this wiring etc inside the wall, ceiling, and floor cavities as possible. But reforming old homes and certain add-ons often require roshutsu due to limited access to the necessary in-wall routes.
