Imotsugi (芋継ぎ) – also “imo” for short, imotsugi is a simple butt joint. This term is often used in contrast to miter joints, or in some cases, a staggered drywall joint pattern. A staggered drywall pattern — generally reserved for ceilings — is considerably stronger to torsional stresses on the house. However, in cases where this staggered pattern isn’t required, drywall boards can start at the same line and 4 boards can join at the same point. This is also referred to as imotsugi.
