Houdate (方立て) – the vertical position of a window is typically determined by the madodai (窓台) and magusa (秣), but the horizontal position is done so by a given hashira (柱) and houdate (方立て). Being that spans between hashira are often wider than the window frame in question, houdate must be used to support the left or right, or in some cases both left and right sides of the frame in a vertical manner.

More generally speaking, houdate can be used to refer to any vertical door or window frame, whether concealed or visible.
