Horudaun (Hold-down)

Horudaun (Hold-down; ホールダウン) – a long steel bolt that pulls and bolts either the foundation beam (dodai) to the concrete (kiso) — see image 1 below — or locks two floors together by doing what’s shown on image 2. Hold-downs are typically used in conjunction with structural diaphragms, or shear walls, and provide resistance against overturning moments created by lateral loads — ie, strong wind or earthquakes.

Holddown types depending on load
