Dokuritsu-bashira

Dokuritsu-bashira (独立柱) – a stand-alone column or pillar without any adjacent wall or bracing, often supporting a small roof or canopy. Some structures incorporate these in numbers, even supporting several floors of weight above. However, care must be taken as they are weak to lateral loads and buckling. Also, the concrete foundation below them should ideally be an unbroken extension of the main structure’s foundation, and not just an isolated base.
