Chuumon-juutaku (注文住宅) – an order-made home. There are generally 2 types of new homes on the market — custom or order-made, and what’s called tateuri, which is a house that’s built or designed first and sold after.

House designs that can be selected and bought out of a catalog are still considered chuumon as they are “ordered”, but you’re not exactly designing your own home per se. This is a smart compromise where both parties win.

The builders get to cut costs by mass-designing house layouts in a way that suits them, and the client — aside from cheaper rates — gets to compare various styles and designs without getting involved with trying to design something the ins and outs of which they may know little about.
