Arawashi (現し) – commonly, a structural element such as a large beam or column, dressed up and used as a finish element. It generally implies the using of such an element more or less in its original size and shape with perhaps some stain or varnish, but it can also refer to the using of the shape only, as in layering drywall around it and finishing it with wallpaper or paint. In the latter example, though a less common form, is still referred to as arawashi, as the shape of the beam or column is still in tact and clearly discernible as such.
